Window of Opportunity Mission
Social Worker (SEC)
Every year hundreds of African children leave their poor villages in search of work, arriving in both small and large cities. Most of these children are deprived of educational and other opportunities. After coming to cities, most of them work as child laborers in restaurants, hotels, and factories.
Maria Binta is employed as the Social Worker at the WOM Orphanage, which is connected to the elementary school. Her job includes providing social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families.
Maria's role is to assist single parents, arrange adoptions, and find foster homes for abandoned or abused children.
As a Social Worker at WOM Orphanage, Maria addresses such duties as:
• Intake of new children • Leading field trips • Nutritional support • Counseling children
Maria is happy to have you assist with these various tasks. This is an opportunity to get and up close and personal look at the Kenyan culture through the eyes of the children. Extended family members may introduce you to the villages where some of these children come from. This will be an eye opening experience for you as many of these villages are living in the same way as the ancestors of the region. This is an excellent project for someone interested in cultural studies as well as child development.
